About NISP

NISP is an innovative business opportunity programme that delivers bottom line benefits for our members whilst generating positive outcomes for the environment and society. Put simply, our vision is to change the way business thinks. Operating at the forefront of industrial symbiosis thinking and practice, the programme helps companies take a fresh look at their resources.

NISP is funded by DEFRA, the Scottish Government, Welsh Assembly Government and Invest Northern Ireland. NISP is, and aims to remain at the forefront of industrial and ecological thinking and practice worldwide.

A successful approach

NISP’s pioneering approach uses industrial symbiosis to identify sustainable resource management solutions for businesses, which are having a significant impact on the UK economy and contributing to impressive environmental achievements.

NISP, as a national programme, is delivered at regional level across the UK. Each of the twelve regions has a team of dedicated IS practitioners working closely with businesses in the area to raise the profile of IS and to recruit members to the programme.

Developing partnerships

NISP works directly with businesses of all sizes and from all sectors. A programme advisory group, consisting of key industry representatives, assists each of the regional IS teams to ensure the programme is driven by genuine business requirements and that the strategic direction is relevant for each region.

Developing ‘partnerships with purpose’ is a contributing factor to the continuing success of NISP and our partners each share a unique working relationship with us.

Funding

pound coin

NISP is part funded by Defra through its Business Resource Efficiency and Waste (BREW) Programme. Some of the regional programmes also receive additional funding from their respective regional development agencies and other organisations.

Defra's BREW Programme uses money derived from increases in Landfill Tax to encourage, support and help businesses improve their resource efficiency. The BREW Programme has been developed in consultation with business representatives, Treasury, and DTI to meet this need.
