£1.2m savings from NISP construction collaboration

Contamination of brown field land is often seen as a hurdle to the redevelopment of such sites. “Dig and Dump” has been a favoured route but landfill space is limited and costs are increasing rapidly. These were some of the issues faced by Braidwater Limited when they were involved in a contract for a housing development. They engaged NISP member ATG Services who after site investigation put together a solution to have the excavated material tested, re-classified and processed using the services of three other NISP members. ATG state that they used the knowledge and experience of Industrial Symbiosis gained after attending NISP workshops and working with NISP practitioners to coordinate and implement the plan. The main outcomes of this multiple synergy included £1,200,000 cost savings, 20,340t of materials diverted from land fill, 26 jobs safeguarded, 2 new jobs created , additional sales of £562000 and 2099t of CO2 reduction.
