Sand reuse yields significant savings for foundry

At MJ Allen’s foundry in Kent, nearly 500 tonnes of spent foundry sand was being landfilled every year at considerable cost to the company – and the environment. The NISP South East team was contacted to find a better solution for this resource. After speaking with several NISP members, it transpired that the suppliers of virgin sand for the site, Hanson, could take the sand and process it for use in asphalt.

While there are many examples of foundry sand reuse in construction materials, the potential has not yet been fully realised in foundries across the South East region - and NISP are keen to spread the word!
