HMP Ford is a category D Open establishment with an emphasis on resettlement with work opportunities including horticulture and vocational work in workshops. The Prison has got a large nursery capable of producing plants that are sent across all other establishments. On this occasion, due to a lack of demand from other prisons, they were left with a large number of bedding plants that would end up becoming compost if not used. The Prison Services have been a long term NISP member and it was due to their continuous involvement with the programme and attendance at one of our Quick Win Workshop in Crawley that an opportunity was identified to send the bedding plants to be used at hospices. Conversations were generated, contacts were exchanged and in a few weeks the bedding plants were transported to two different hospices. Not only the waste was avoided but the plants were preserved and used to create another beautiful garden.
