Diageo sets exemplar on canteen food waste

Released on Jun 25 2009

The Diageo bottling and canning plant at Marshall’s Road in Belfast is an important asset for Diageo Global Supply operating at worldclass standards of quality and efficiency. It plays a key role in servicing the packaging needs of the business in Ireland. The plant is also the sole producer of Diageo small pack products (cans and bottles) for Ireland and export markets across the world. Some187 people work at this plant; maintain a 24-hour operation, seven days a week. Financial savings for diverting 10 tonnes from landfill are current rates is about £1000 per annum. Though there are some financial savings, this is more of an exemplar ‘best practice’ from a world leading organisation. The reduction of methane which is significantly more potent than carbon dioxide cannot be overemphasised. This can be replicated in other organisation leading to significant environmental benefit in terms of diversion from landfill and reduction in carbon dioxide emissions.
