Peter Laybourn

Programme Director

Peter is the creator of the National Industrial Symbiosis Programme - NISP.

After graduating from university in 1977 with a degree in Economics and Ecology, Peter spent 18 years in the aerospace manufacturing industry as contracts and commercial manager at GEC Marconi, Smiths Industries and Meggitt Aviation & Marine. After completing a second degree in Environmental Management, he went on to work as environmental coordinator for a local authority, where he helped install EMAS and set up an energy efficiency charity which is still thriving today.

Using his wealth of expertise, Peter has put together several partnerships to deliver sustainability educational programmes and is currently working on formal qualifications for industrial symbiosis. Peter was also Deputy Chief Executive of the UK Business Council for Sustainable Development for 4 years.

Whilst working as a sustainability consultant for Shell Exploration and Production, he was inspired to create the National Industrial Symbiosis Programme (NISP), International Synergie’s flagship project, after hearing about a by-product synergy programme operating in the Gulf of Mexico.

NISP is currently the only national industrial symbiosis programme in the world, has won several major awards and continues to be world leading at delivering economic, environmental and social benefits Using the industrial symbiosis approach, NISP is now being exported to many countries across four continents.
